Geoffroy’s Horseshoe Bat Rhinolophus clivosus

This is the northern distribution limit of this medium-sized, desert dwelling insectivorous bat. Unlike the two other species in this bunker, it stays here year-round, in a colony of about 30 individuals. The females give birth to a single pup in the beginning of spring. The pup is independent by fall. This is one of the only known maternity colonies of this species in Israel.

Trident Leaf-Nosed Bat Asellia trident

The colony you are watching is a maternal colony consisting of several thousand mothers who come here to give birth and raise their pups. This old-world leaf-nosed bat is a medium-sized insectivorous bat, that feeds mainly on mosquitoes, heteropterans and beetles (some of which are significant agricultural pests). It is typically found in the desert and desert-edge in Africa and Asia, and in Israel it is found in the southern desert and the Great Rift region all the way north to the Hermon Mountain. The Trident Leaf-Nosed Bats spend their winters in warm caves in the south, and populate the bunkers from spring to fall.

Lesser Mouse-Tailed Bat
Rhinopoma cystops

This unique bat is a medium-sized insectivorous bat, feeding mainly on moths, heteropterans, beetles and ant-queens (alates). It is typically found in the desert and desert-edge in Africa and Asia, and in Israel it is found in the southern desert and the Great Rift region all the way north to the Hermon Mountain. The Lesser Mouse-Tailed Bats spend their winters in warm caves in the south, and populate the bunkers from spring to fall. In this bunker there is a maternal colony consisting of about a thousand mothers who come here to give birth and raise their pups.
